Though the situation surrounding Aaron Rodgers is the Green Bay Packers’ primary focus right now, the wide receiver corps, led by Matt LaFleur, is another area of concern for the team.
The head coach of the Packers was questioned about his roster’s lack of receiver depth and his plans to address it during the Annual League Meeting.
“We’ll need to bolster the team with a few players. LaFleur reportedly asked, “What do we have on the team right now—something like five guys?” during the NFL meeting, as reported by ESPN reporter Rob Demovsky. “Well, it would be nice to have veteran leadership. Nonetheless, I believe that last year’s team members Randall Cobb and Allen Lazard performed admirably. But these two guys, Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson, will develop a great deal.”
The Packers currently have five wideouts on their roster, and none of them have played in more than 14 league games. Romeo Doubs (13 games) and Samori Toure (11 games) are the next two sophomore wide receivers in the group, behind Christian Watson (14 games). The team’s bottom two at the position right now are Jeff Cotton (one game in 2021 with Jacksonville) and Bo Melton (no NFL games).
A seasoned receiver would be what Green Bay would be seeking.
Allen Lazard claims that the Packers have not expressed much interest in bringing him back to Green Bay, allowing the player to sign with the New York Jets. The team has also shown little interest in any of the well-known free agents at the position that are still available, including Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, Chosen Anderson, Byron Pringle, N’Keal Harry, and T.Y. Hilton, despite Matt LaFleur’s talk.
General manager Brian Gutekunst will eventually likely bolster the roster with one or two inexpensive veteran wide receivers, or he may decide to take a chance on one more player in this year’s league Draft. But it seems like the Packers are counting on Watson and Doubs to keep improving in their second NFL season.
