Its a great news for the 49ers as Kyle Shanahan has officially announced the arrival of…
In order to contend for the NFC top seed going into the final stretch, the San Francisco 49ers are strengthening their secondary. According to NFL Media, the team inked veteran defensive back Logan Ryan to a contract on Tuesday. The details of Ryan’s contract with the Niners were not made public right away.
The 32-year-old spent the 2022 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he last played. Ryan totaled 37 tackles, three pass breakups, and one interception in nine games (six starts) for the Bucs. Prior to that, Ryan gained recognition in the league as a player for the New England Patriots, who selected him out of Rutgers in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He helped New England win two Super Bowl victories during his four seasons there.
The 49ers, who are currently the betting favorite to win Super Bowl LVIII after upsetting the Philadelphia Eagles on the road in Week 13, benefit greatly from Ryan’s wealth of veteran and postseason experience. With those two Super Bowl appearances under his resume, the defensive back has played in 16 playoff games.
Ryan played two seasons with the Titans, two seasons with the Giants, and two seasons with the Patriots before moving to Tampa.
Ryan has demonstrated the ability to play across the secondary in addition to his experience. Despite being a corner when he first joined the league, he has more recently played safety in his prior appearances. He could contribute to the depth at safety in the San Francisco secondary after George Odum and Talanoa Hufanga suffered injuries recently.
Throughout his career, Ryans has recorded 98 pass breakups, 13 sacks, 15 forced fumbles, 742 tackles, and 19 interceptions.
