Ime Udoka, the former head coach of the Boston Celtics, appeared to have severed his relationship with a team employee after being suspended from the team for a year.
After the suspension was announced, Udoka, who had dated movie star Nia Long for 13 years, apologized. It is reported that he was offered the chance to step down from his position but declined.
After calling off their engagement in December, Udoka and Long had one son together. The actress recently told reporters that she is now “single.”
Udoka’s role would not be guaranteed upon his return, as ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowksi had stated. This has now been demonstrated by the permanent appointment of his former assistant, Joe Mazzulla.

In lieu of Udoka, Mazzulla has performed admirably, leading the Celtics to the top seed in the Eastern Conference halfway through the season. This weekend’s all-star break will see Mazzulla serve as a coach.
Working under Udoka, who made an impression in his first season as head coach and took the Celtics to the NBA Finals before they were defeated by Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors, he has been a member of the team since 2019.
However, according to a statement made public on Thursday, the Celtics have decided to stick with Mazzulla going forward, so Udoka will now need to find a new team.
The team did not provide any additional information regarding Udoka, who is still officially employed by the team, other than to confirm that “Mazzulla replaces Ime Udoka” in the statement.
Joe Mazzulla, the new head coach of the Boston Celtics
Only appointed by the Boston Celtics in June 2021, Joe Mazzulla Udoka is the team’s new head coach. Brad Stevens left the coaching position to take on the role of general manager.
After spending the majority of his playing career with the San Antonio Spurs, Udoka joined their coaching staff in 2012 and stayed for seven years before having stints with the Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets. Since then, he has been a highly respected coach in league circles.
While serving a suspension from the Celtics earlier in the season, Udoka was strongly linked with taking over as head coach of the Nets. However, the team faced criticism for even considering him, and they ultimately decided to hire internal coach Jacque Vaughn.
The Celtics are expected to contend for their 19th championship, which would be their first in fifteen years, as Mazzulla becomes just the 19th person to hold the position of head coach of the illustrious NBA team.
