breakingnews: Are the “well-rounded” Ravens a real danger to the Chiefs’ dominance?

With home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and the AFC’s top seed secured, the Baltimore Ravens had one of the best regular seasons one could have imagined.

Following their decisive victory over a resilient Houston Texans squad in the Divisional Round, the Ravens took on Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, who disappointed in their crucial game. Thus, the once-promising Ravens season came to an unhappy end.

Nevertheless, Bucky Brooks of NFL.com believes Baltimore has the potential to unseat the Chiefs as the team atop the AFC West. “The Ravens’ disappointing home loss in the AFC Championship Game should not keep Lamar Jackson’s squad from making another run at the title next season,” Brooks stated.

“After spending another offseason honing Todd Monken’s system, the two-time MVP will feel even more at ease in the Ravens’ offense.

As the offense shifts to a pass-centric strategy with Jackson prominently featured as a thrower, Jackson will likely lose a few seasoned playmakers on the perimeter (see: pending free agents Odell Beckham Jr. and Nelson Agholor). However, the continued development of Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman, and Isaiah Likely should keep the offense rolling.”

With another offseason under Todd Monken, Jackson and the offense should theoretically improve. The former Georgia coordinator was able to turn the run-heavy Baltimore offense into one that is more pass-oriented in just one season (the Ravens still lead the league in rushing).

The majority of the offseason adjustments have been made on defense, but Brooks notes that the defense’s sheer talent will ensure that it remains a strong force the following season. “Defensively, the loss of Mike Macdonald and several key assistants could alter Baltimore’s approach, but superior talent on that side of the ball will make it easier for new coordinator Zach Orr to adapt and adjust to his new role,” wrote Brooks.

“The Ravens’ personnel are more important than their plays as a unit that specializes in causing disruption and turnovers; this will be crucial to the defense’s continued dominance. With a strong team in place, the Ravens will continue to be real contenders to end the Chiefs’ championship run.”
