One of the Seahawks’ best players died in a horrifying auto accident, leaving the team grievously wounded.
On November 18, 2018, in Baltimore, during the first half of an NFL football game, Baltimore Ravens running back Alex Collins (34), pictured in front of Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Dre Kirkpatrick (right), dances after scoring a touchdown. Collins, a former NFL running back who played five seasons with the Seattle Seahawks and the Baltimore Ravens, passed unexpectedly following an incredible collegiate career at Arkansas. His age was 28. Collins passed away on Monday, August 14, 2023, as stated in a family statement provided by the Seahawks. (Image via AP/Nick Wass)
The Seahawks received a statement from Collins’ family on Monday night.
“Alex had admirers from all across the world, including his family, friends, and supporters. The statement went on to say, “His drive, determination, and larger-than-life personality can be attested to by all who truly know him.” “We respectfully ask that you keep our family in your prayers and thoughts during this trying time.”
In each of his three years as an Arkansas University student-athlete, Collins amassed more than 1,000 yards in rushing. He is only behind Darren McFadden in the school’s career running record. He participated in one of the most remarkable plays in recent SEC history in 2015 while playing for Mississippi.
In overtime, the Razorbacks found themselves down seven points and on fourth and 25. Brandon Allen hit Hunter Henry with a great ball; Henry was going to be tackled near the sideline and well short of the line to gain. Henry attempted a desperate throw back toward the field’s center. The ball bounced to Collins, who sprinted for the opposite sideline and earned the first down.
Ultimately, Arkansas won 53-52.
“We are extremely saddened by the unfortunate and premature passing of Alex Collins. In a social media statement, the Arkansas football account said, “He was a legendary Razorback and an even better person.” He obviously loved the Razorbacks and aspired to be a Hog. We shall sincerely miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Collins played for the Ravens for two seasons and the Seahawks for three. He rushed for 973 yards with Baltimore in 2017.
“Alex was a joy to be around and someone whose light shone brightly,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said in a statement. “He had a great attitude that impacted everyone he came into contact with and was an incredible teammate. That’s something I will never forget about him. In addition to being an excellent player, he was a tireless runner who greatly aided our victories when he was in Baltimore.
This season, Collins was a member of the Memphis Showboats of the USFL.
