Though their offense may be among the youngest in the NFL, the Baltimore Ravens are among the oldest teams in the league overall.

What age? The sixth oldest, precisely.

With an average roster age of 25.69, the Ravens were among the older teams in the league according to a list compiled by Andrew Walker of Colts.com, which showed the average age of all 32 NFL rosters.

The sheer quantity of elderly veterans on their defense shouldn’t be a major surprise. However, Baltimore is still relatively young, at least when it comes to offensive play.

One of the NFL’s oldest rosters is that of the Baltimore Ravens.
Just three offensive players, including two starters, are older than thirty for the Ravens. Alejandro Villanueva and Kevin Zeitler, the two offensive line additions made in the offseason, are both older than thirty.

The team’s starting right guard, Zeitler, is 31 years old, and their new starting right tackle, Villanueva, is 32. That being said, neither is the oldest player on the offensive.

That title belongs to veteran Andre Smith, who at 34 years old is tied for the second-oldest position on the team. Smith opted out of the 2020 season and has never actually played in a game with the Ravens, but he still contributes to the average.

While Eric Tomlinson, Greg Mancz, and Nick Boyle are among the other offensive veterans, the Ravens’ core offensive line is largely composed of younger players. However, this cannot be said of the defense.

The highest number of players in the NFL who are 30 years of age or older on defense is eight, from Baltimore. Some of these athletes, like Calais Campbell and Brandon Williams, will play important roles in 2021.

Others, such as Justin Ellis and Anthony Levine, are more special team or reserve players.

At 34 years old, Levine, Campbell, and Smith are all tied for the second-oldest position on the team. At the ripe age of thirty-two, Pernell McPhee, Jimmy Smith, and Williams are seated. Ellis is thirty years old, but Derek Wolfe and L.J. Fort are both thirty-one.

Of course, punter Sam Koch is the oldest player on the team. In 2021, the 38-year-old will begin his 16th NFL season; he will turn 39 prior to Week 1. At age 31, Justin Tucker brings the total number of players on the roster up to thirty.

Although the Ravens’ core is still relatively young overall, they do have a fair number of veterans. A strong young offensive core is represented by players like Lamar Jackson, J.K. Dobbins, Marquise Brown, Rashod Bateman, and Mark Andrews.

Even though it is an older defense, it still features a few young players that are very good, like DeShon Elliott, Patrick Queen, Marlon Humphrey, Malik Harrison, and Odafe Oweh.

The Baltimore Ravens have a good mix of young players and veterans, which should help them succeed in the short and long terms, despite their somewhat older average.
