Terrible news: the head coach and a key player have announced their retirements owing to problems with their wives.
AMSTERDAM (AP) — After just six months at the Dutch powerhouse, Ajax, coach Alfred Schreuder was let go after the team went seven games without winning. Ajax is the four-time European champion.
After his team’s 1-1 draw with Volendam on Thursday night, Schreuder—who took over for Erik ten Hag when he left for Manchester United—was fired by Ajax, who cited “disappointing results and lack of development within the team.”
Club director Edwin van der Sar described the choice as both painful and necessary. “We believed Alfred could make a difference. We realized he was powerless to change the course of events.
Seven points behind league leader Feyenoord in the top flight, Eredivisie, is the reigning champion, Ajax.
Schreuder’s replacement was not named right away.
