Major Setback: After nearly killing his wife in a small domestic dispute, 49ers standout player has landed in police custody and could be charged to court for attempted murder.

According to a department statement, Charles Omenihu, a defensive lineman for the San Francisco 49ers, was detained on charges of domestic abuse after police were summoned to his San Jose home.

After being taken into custody at the Santa Clara County jail, the 25-year-old was eventually freed upon securing bond. Even though the accusation is simply a misdemeanor, Omenihu faces a maximum one-year prison sentence if found guilty.

On Monday afternoon, a woman claiming to be his girlfriend contacted the police to his San Jose residence and stated he had “pushed her to the ground during an argument.”

According to a news release from the department, while the woman reported arm pain, “no visible physical injuries were observed.”

She refused to be treated medically.

The team released an official statement, saying, “We are aware of the matter involving Charles Omenihu and are in the process of gathering further information.”

Less than a day had passed after San Francisco’s playoff victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Santa Clara on Sunday when the alleged event occurred.

The 6-foot-5, 280-pound Omenihu was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence after providing police with a statement at his home. After that, the police obtained an emergency protection order for Omenihu, which requires him to be away from his accuser for the duration of the order.

There are currently no charges pending. District attorneys for Santa Clara County may decide to take this action based on the findings of an ongoing investigation.

Omenihu has been an important backup for the 49ers, who take on the top-seeded Eagles in the NFC championship game on Sunday in Philadelphia, despite not being a starter.

In the 49ers’ 41-23 victory over the Seattle Seahawks earlier this month in the Wildcard Round, Omenihu added two more sacks to his season total of 4.5.

Due to an oblique injury, he was limited to just 15 snaps during San Francisco’s victory over Dallas. He was able to resume play before the game’s conclusion, though.
