Unexpected: The Blue Jays have signed Kevin Kiermaier, and they have decided to re-sign a key player who was dumped

The Toronto Blue Jays, in spite of their 2023 MLB Playoff performance, are trying to get better. According to Jon Heyman, the Blue Jays and Paolo Espino, a former relief pitcher for the Nationals, have reached an agreement. Toronto made this move in an attempt to increase the depth of their bullpen during a fascinating offseason.

Toronto wants to acquire Paolo Espino in order to strengthen its pitching staff.
Espino leaves the Washington Nationals after four seasons and signs with the Blue Jays. In three games in 2023, the 36-year-old right-hand pitcher struck out three batters, recorded an ERA of 24.75, and had an average WHIP of 4.25. Espino battled a finger injury, but he should be healthy enough to play a role for Toronto.

The Blue Jays already have Jose Berrios and Kevin Gausman as starting pitchers. Gausman, who ranked second in the MLB with 237 strikeouts and seventh in the ERA with a 3.16 ERA in 2023, was the leader of Toronto’s bullpen.

Berrios performed admirably in 2023 as well. The 29-year-old was among the league’s top 25 in strikeouts, WHIP, and ERA. Now, Toronto’s pitching attack should be strengthened by the addition of Paolo Espino.

The Nationals finished 71-91 and missed the MLB Playoffs in 2023, demonstrating their poor play. On the other hand, Espino learned a lot in the fierce NL East and will give the Blue Jays more veteran leadership.

Shoe Ohtani, who was rumored to prefer the Blue Jays in free agency, was not signed by Toronto. The team is still working to deepen its lineup, though. Toronto is looking to exact revenge for the AL Wild Card series sweep it gave up to the Minnesota Twins.
