Unbelievable: Mike McCarthy, the former head coach of the Green Bay Packers, announced his return to the team.

Green Bay: Sunday night, about three hours following the team’s humiliating 20-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field, the Green Bay Packers fired head coach Mike McCarthy.

Joe Philbin, the offensive coordinator, was named head coach in an acting capacity. From 2012 until 2015, Philbin was the Miami Dolphins’ head coach. Before being let go early in the 2015 season, he had a 24-28 record.

“The Green Bay Packers’ expectations and standards have not been met by the 2018 campaign. Packers team president and CEO Mark Murphy said in a statement issued by the team shortly after 6 p.m., “As a result, I made the difficult decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately.” For 13 seasons, Mike led the Packers and was an excellent head coach. During that time, the team enjoyed significant success both on and off the field.

“We would like to express our gratitude to Mike, Jessica, and the entire McCarthy family for everything they have done on behalf of the Packers, the communities of Green Bay, and Wisconsin. The process of choosing the Green Bay Packers’ next head coach will start right away.

McCarthy made no mention of a potential termination during his news conference following the game.

When asked what the team does moving forward, a dejected McCarthy responded, “I’ve never been in this spot,” following the game. When they come in here tomorrow, I’m not going to act like I know what the hell I’m going to do. We will continue to represent the Packers honorably, as we always have. I am aware of that.

McCarthy’s fate seemed to be sealed after the Cardinals, who had the worst offense in the league and finished 2-9, defeated him.

Following the game, McCarthy stated, “Stating the obvious, that was clearly a very disappointing loss.” We had to win that particular game. We’re all let down. I performed inadequately. We were not a strong enough football team.

McCarthy, who coached the Packers for 13 seasons, leaves with a 135-87-2 record, which includes a 10-8 postseason record. The Packers had made the playoffs nine times in his previous twelve years as head coach, and he guided the 2010 squad to the Super Bowl XLV championship. The team came one win away from winning the Super Bowl in the NFC Championship Games of 2007, 2014, and 2016.
