unbelievable: Ime Udoka will return as the new head coach of the Boston Celtics

Ime Udoka, an assistant for the Brooklyn Nets, and the Boston Celtics are reportedly finalizing an agreement for Udoka to take over as Boston’s head coach.

Udoka, 43, has been a longtime assistant coach for San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich. He assisted Popovich during the 2019 World Cup and spent seven years on the Spurs staff.

Before retiring in 2012 and joining Popovich’s staff in San Antonio, the Portland, Oregon, native played 316 games over seven seasons, averaging 5.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game while representing the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, and the Spurs.

Positive comments from Celtics players about Udoka’s performance at the World Cup tournament were referenced in the ESPN story.

Udoka takes over for the Celtics, who made it to the Eastern Conference finals three out of the last four seasons before sliding all the way down to the No. 7 seed this year and losing to Brooklyn in the opening round. Coach Brad Stevens gave up his bench spot to succeed basketball legend Danny Ainge, who retired following the team’s five-game defeat to the Nets.

The Celtics appear to be slipping behind in the East, despite once being ready to fight for a postseason berth. Despite the success of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the team has had trouble assembling a group of players capable of competing with the stars that have assembled in Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and now Brooklyn and Atlanta.
