Don Deal: The Colts have added a key player who is comparable to…
For their game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts have promoted veteran wide receiver D.J. Montgomery from the practice squad to the active roster.
“The #Colts are signing WR DJ Montgomery from the practice squad to their active roster, per agents @davidcanter and @NessMugrabi,” NFL Insider Ian Rapoport wrote on X.
Later, the Colts formally declared the roster change. In addition to wide receiver Juwann Winfree being waived and defensive tackle Grover Stewart being activated from the Commissioner’s Exempt list, Montgomery was also promoted.
Following the announcement of Jonathan Taylor’s thumb surgery, the Colts activated running back Tyler Goodson from the practice squad to the active roster in addition to Montgomery. Given the Colts’ current position in the standings and their wide receiver depth, Montgomery’s addition makes sense.

The Colts offense will seek any kind of assistance or aim for a last-minute push during the regular season after putting together their fourth straight victory to move up to 7-5 and the current sixth spot in the AFC playoffs.
Montgomery has not produced much in his brief career in the NFL, which started in 2021 with the New York Jets. He has caught 3 passes on 6 targets for 36 yards and 2 first downs. He hasn’t, however, had much opportunity to demonstrate his abilities on the field.
While Josh Downs, Alec Pierce, and Michael Pittman Jr. lead the Colts’ receiving corps without a doubt, it’s still critical to have speed and experience available on the depth chart. In order to get the Colts defense ready for the most crucial games of the season yet to come, Montgomery can also keep giving them good looks during practice.
Montgomery gives the Colts’ underappreciated receiving group, which appears to be hitting its stride at the ideal moment, a veteran presence. We’ll see if Indianapolis can maintain its momentum against the 6-6 Bengals on Sunday in a hard-fought game.
