For the Final Six…, Red Sox Seem Like A Surprise Suitor…

In the last few days of the offseason, can the Boston Red Sox make a splash to save their season?

Craig Breslow, the chief baseball officer of the Red Sox, is still keen to acquire starting pitchers and a versatile right-handed bat with impact potential.

In the industry, there is a perception that the Red Sox will have to make a significant move this winter, even though both requirements may be satisfied at the top of the market.

“Then again, underestimating (super agent Scott Boras) is dangerous, particularly when many clubs, notably the Cubs, Giants, Blue Jays and Angels, still appear capable of spending big,” The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal wrote on Thursday.

“A surprise club or two—hey, Red Sox—may also be hiding. Therefore, there’s a good chance that the Boras Five and Jorge Soler, a notable free agent who is represented by Dan Lozano, will receive high compensation.”

The group known as the “Boras Five” consists of J.D. Martinez, the designated hitter, southpaws Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, third baseman Matt Chapman, and outfielder Cody Bellinger.

Montgomery and Soler seem like the most sensible choices for the Red Sox among the aforementioned names. Snell has a qualifying offer, but he would also be a significant improvement.
