Toby Keith, who was raised in Moore, Oklahoma, developed a fervent devotion to the Oklahoma Sooners. Bob Stoops, the former head coach of Oklahoma football, once recounted how the song “How Do You Like Me Now?!” captured the essence of the Sooners’ 2000 championship run. The audio clip of Stoops discussing his favorite Toby Keith song and its influence on the championship team was shared by the well-known Oklahoma Twitter account The Ref.

“That song was well-known when I arrived at OU in 1999, and we won the National Champion title in 2000. When we celebrated in the stadium after winning the national championship, Toby was singing “How Do You Like Me Now?” in front of a group of guys who weren’t exactly popular when I first walked in.

In 2018, Keith was also a guest picker for the Sooners on College Gameday, which preceded the Red River Rivalry between Oklahoma football and Texas Longhorns.

“My boy and I don’t talk other than during this one time of year. “You know who I’m picking? The Sooners, baby,” Keith declared while appearing on the premier college football program on ESPN.

Regretfully, the Sooners were defeated by the Longhorns 48–45. The Sooners had no answer for Texas gunslinger Sam Ehlinger, despite wide receivers Marquise Brown and CeeDee Lamb combining for three touchdowns and quarterback Kyler Murray totaling 396 yards and five scores.
