The Lions have finalized a massive contract.
The 2023 offseason has begun with the conclusion of the Detroit Lions 2022 season.
This column, which is always changing, will concentrate on the Lions’ roster as it approaches free agency. Fans will get a summary of all 78 players who are on the roster, injured reserve, or practice squad at the end of the season with this position group-organized article.
An end-of-season depth chart for the position, a list of the roles the players occupied, the specifics of the 2023 contracts that the players now signed with the Lions have, and a few essential terms that can help readers better understand each player’s circumstances are all included in each section.
Important terms to understand:
UFA: Uninhibited During the free agency window, which opens on March 15 (tampering negotiations start on the 13th), free agents may sign with any team. At any point, the Lions may re-sign these players.
RFA: Limited The Lions own the rights to free agents.
The Lions may choose to match an RFA’s contract offer from another team, or they may be compensated with a draft pick in exchange for letting the player go.
Exclusive Rights Act (ERFA) contract negotiations between free agents and the Lions are limited to that unless Detroit decides to grant them access to free agency.
Players who had a contract with an NFL team in 2022 but were not on the roster at the end of the season are known as street free agents, or SFAs. They can sign right away with any team. NFL practice squad players are the most frequent SFAs.
Contracts known as futures deals are offered to street-free agents before the commencement of free agency. The reason these contracts are referred to as “future” agreements is that, although they are signed now, they won’t count against the cap until a “future” date—that is, when free agency begins.
2023 Cap Hit: The amount of a player’s salary that is deducted from the team’s 2023 cap.
Remaining guarantees: this is the total amount of guaranteed money due to the player for the duration of his contract, not only in 2023. Even if the player is no longer on the roster, the Lions’ cap will be affected if they let go of a guaranteed-money player.
