Due to a lack of understanding, the most talented player for the Baltimore Ravens has signed a new deal with a different team.

After agreeing to a massive extension with the Baltimore Ravens, Lamar Jackson has surpassed Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts’ contract last month to become the highest-paid player in the NFL.

Although it is not the fully-guaranteed deal Jackson was chasing, his decision to play hardball in negotiations over the previous two years has paid off. The 26-year-old accepted a $260 million offer that included $185 million in guarantees spread throughout the deal.

The Ravens made Jackson an offer in September that was $50 million a year with $175 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero. Jackson has since extracted an additional $10 million in guarantees over the length of the deal to ensure his future at M&T Bank Stadium.

The $450 million contract Patrick Mahomes inked with the Kansas City Chiefs last year is the largest in the NFL in terms of total value, but it is spread out over an unprecedented ten years. As a result, Jackson’s contract is the most recent market-setting agreement on an annual average, placing him above players like Deshaun Watson ($46m), Kyler Murray ($46m), Russell Wilson ($49m), Jalen Hurts ($51m), and Aaron Rodgers ($50m).

 

Top young quarterbacks still on rookie contracts who will soon sign large-money extensions, such as Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, and Trevor Lawrence, are thrilled about Jackson’s deal, which came after months of uncertainty about his future in Baltimore. The deal is a significant improvement over Jackson’s non-exclusive franchise tag tender, which the Ravens awarded him when his rookie deal expired last month. Prior to his final agreement with the Ravens, he was scheduled to earn $32 million in the 2023 season.

Prior to being tagged, Jackson made a trade request on March 2. Because of the non-exclusive tag, he was free to negotiate with other teams, and if the Ravens chose not to match any offer, they could acquire him for two first-round picks. In the end, there was little trade interest; several teams connected to Jackson informed reporters right away that they had no interest in doing business.
