Packers general manager expresses genuine emotions towards Anders Carlson following playoff exit

After having trouble for most of the season, the Green Bay Packers had a late-season surge that helped them qualify for the playoffs. After winning their final two regular-season games, the Packers were able to advance to the Wild Card round and play the Dallas Cowboys.

Given that the Cowboys had won all of their games at home during the regular season and that the majority of those wins had been blowouts, nobody anticipated that the Packers would defeat them in Dallas. The Packers played their best game of the season in Dallas after deciding not to be intimidated by that. The Cowboys were defeated 48–32 by them.

For the Packers, there was one concerning aspect of that game. Throughout the season, rookie placekicker Anders Carlson had a pattern of missing extra point attempts. Throughout the regular season, he missed six field goal attempts and five extra point attempts.

Carlson missed a fourth-quarter field goal that would have increased Green Bay’s lead over the San Francisco 49ers to 24-17, one week after the team’s victory over the Cowboys. That would have made overtime possible in the match. Rather, the Packers suffered a 24–21 defeat in the divisional playoff match.

If a reliable, experienced kicker had been available, the Packers would have taken him into consideration, according to general manager Brian Gutekunst.

“I believe that as the season was coming to an end and we were getting close to making the playoffs, we would have given it some thought if there had been a veteran option available who would have been extremely good. However, it wasn’t. He was by far the best choice. We’re very enthusiastic about his future endeavors.
