Due to the team’s setbacks, the NBA Jazz owner wants to sell the team.

The owner of the Utah Jazz in the NBA, Ryan Smith, requested on Wednesday that the NHL start the process of expanding to add a new team to Salt Lake City.

With the offer of the Jazz’s home arena, SEG-owned Delta Center, as a temporary rink for such a club, Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) informed the 32-team league that it could run a new team in Utah as early as the following season.

Since 2002, Smith, a billionaire businessman who also shares ownership of Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer, and his spouse Ashley have been in talks with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman regarding a Salt Lake City team.

The NHL said in a statement, “The NHL appreciates the interest expressed by Smith Entertainment Group to bring NHL hockey to Utah.”

“We have been impressed by Ryan and Ashley Smith’s dedication to their community and their vision for Utah—not just as a hockey market, but as a leading hub for sports and entertainment—during our conversations over the past two years.

“Utah is a promising market and we look forward to continuing our discussions.”

Smith stated that a team could start out sharing space with the Jazz at Delta Center, the site of five NHL preseason games, or they could postpone their ice time until a new arena is built in the Salt Lake City region.
