Due to his son’s death, a significant Green Bay Packers player has formally announced his retirement.

A week after a severe asthma attack, the 17-year-old son of a former Super Bowl winner passes away.

The tragically young 17-year-old son of former Green Bay Packers Super Bowl champion linebacker Brady, Julius Poppinga, passed away following a severe asthma attack.

Julius Poppinga, the 17-year-old son of former Green Bay Packers linebacker Brady Poppinga, passed away following a severe asthma attack.

The Ventura County Star reports that Julius became ill last week. According to reports, the adolescent did not recover from the attack and had to deal with a collapsed lung while in the hospital.


The seventeen-year-old junior played two-way football at Westlake High School in Thousand Oaks, California, and aspired to be like his father. Julius was a vital member of the team and a lacrosse player as well.

A picture of Julius and his sister was shared on the Westlake football team’s Instagram page, along with the words, “The Westlake Football family wants to send our deepest condolences to the Poppinga family.” All of the tribe will miss Julius terribly because he was a cherished member of our team. #OneTribe #ForeverWarriorBrady Poppinga, Julius’ father, was selected by the Packers in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He won Super Bowl XLV while playing for the storied NFC North team for six of his eight seasons. In addition, he played for the Dallas Cowboys and the St. Louis Rams. He concluded his playing career in 2012 with the Cowboys.

Westlake is set to play Thousand Oaks on Friday, and the Los Angeles Times reports that Poppinga informed Serve that his son would have preferred for the team to play.
