John Tortorella has just announced another monstrous addition to his team as he tend to solidify his team walls with this monumental deal..
Owen Tippett, a forward for the Philadelphia Flyers, has agreed to a new eight-year contract extension worth $6.2 million.
The agreement is valid until 2032. Along with Joel Farabee (2028) and Sean Couturier (2030), Tippett is the only player in Philadelphia with a long-term contract.
Currently in his third season with the Flyers, the 24-year-old winger is on track to have his best campaign to date in the professional ranks. With 18 goals and 30 points in 46 games, he is on pace to have his first season with 30 goals and 50 points. With 27 goals and 49 points in his first full season with the Philadelphia 76ers last season, he came close.
After being selected by the Florida Panthers with the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, it appeared inevitable that Tippett would become a household name. In his draft year, he showed off his deadly shot with the Mississauga Steelheads of the OHL, scoring 44 goals and 75 points. After spending seven games in the NHL with the Panthers in 2017–18, he was returned to the OHL, where he was once more a prolific offensive player.
During the COVID-shortened 2020–21 season, Tippett played his first full NHL season, though he was not very productive. Tippett didn’t begin to demonstrate that he could be a productive NHL player until he was traded to Philadelphia in 2022 along with two first-round picks in the deal that sent Claude Giroux to Florida.
Since then, he has been an integral part of the team’s starting six and has contributed significantly to the Flyers’ recent success.
He has a lower-body injury right now and won’t be cleared to play again until after the NHL All-Star Game break, which coincidentally is against Florida.
Following a 3-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, the Flyers will try to recover on Saturday at 12:30 PM against the Boston Bruins. With 56 points, five behind the New York Rangers, Philadelphia is currently third in the Metropolitan Division. The team has struggled lately, as they have dropped their last four games.
