People are being urged to get tested for colon cancer by Dak Prescott.

The 30-year-old quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys appeared on TODAY on Friday, where he discussed his goal of increasing awareness of early detection. While Prescott was still in college, his mother Peggy passed away in 2013 from colon cancer.

Regarding his mother, Prescott referred to her as “the best.”

“Obviously, you can just tell [I’m] brightening up, getting the opportunity to just speak about her,” he stated. She was “extremely selfless, hardworking, loved her boys, and did anything for her three boys,” he continued. My mother is the reason I am who I am.”

Prescott has offered to help with the Colorectal Cancer Alliance’s Lead from Beyond campaign by helping to film a PSA video. The humorous campaign, which debuted in 2022, uses comedy to spread the word about the significance of getting screened for colon cancer. Previous films included Terry Crews and Ryan Reynolds.

Colon cancer is the second-deadliest cancer in the US, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Prescott describes how people can get tested via an at-home test kit or a colonoscopy in the most recent video. “Grab a sample collection container and place a sticker of something you want to s— on right on the underside,” he goes on to explain.

“Obviously 30 and 40-year-old men, African Americans, whites, it doesn’t even matter,” he stated to TODAY. “If you’ve had prior health issues, something with your stomach, or any other concerns, have anxiety about getting checked, I hope somebody watches that, I hope somebody says, ‘You know, this is easier than I thought.'”

Ultimately, sharing my story is my motivation and the main reason I’m on this platform—not football. It’s to motivate others,” he went on.

Prescott was selected the Walter Payton Man of the Year for 2022 in February because of his charitable foundation’s efforts to prevent suicide and advance cancer research in remembrance of his brother and mother, respectively.

An NFL player is awarded the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for “his excellence on and off the field,” according to the league.

Prescott started off by expressing gratitude to everyone in his immediate vicinity, including his father, siblings, the Cowboys organization, and the people working on his foundation, the Faith Fight Finish Foundation.

“I want to acknowledge the person who has had the biggest influence on my life, my mother, Peggy,” he stated. “My moral compass has always been my mother. And I want to share her bravery and resilience with the world through my own philanthropic giving.”

“She was one of a kind,” he continued. “My mother inspired me and motivated me to be great despite the circumstances.”

Prescott added that following the suicide death of his brother Jace in 2020, he increased the scope of the foundation’s activities.

“But since the work also honors my brother, Jace, who as you saw passed from suicide during COVID in 2020, I made a promise that that would be one life taken to save millions,” he continued.
