SEALED: The incredible star was ultimately signed by the Detroit Lions following extensive negotiations.
January 22 (UPI) Zach Ertz, a seasoned tight end, has agreed to join the Detroit Lions practice squad.
On Monday morning, insiders informed ESPN, NFL Network, and The Athletic about the deal. When the Lions play the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC title game on Sunday in Santa Clara, California, Ertz might be added to the active roster.
The 33-year-old Ertz played for the Arizona Cardinals for the first half of the season. Through seven games, the three-time Pro Bowl selection had 27 catches for 187 yards and a touchdown. Due to a quad injury, he was placed on injured reserve in October and released in November.
Ertz played in one postseason game with the Cardinals and seven with the Philadelphia Eagles. In those appearances, he totaled 36 catches for 381 yards and two touchdowns.
Because of multiple injuries over the past few weeks, the Lions need depth at tight end. Brock Wright, the No. 2 tight end, hurt his forearm on Sunday. Sam LaPorta, the starting pitcher, is using a hyperextended knee.
Sunday in Detroit, during the Lions’ victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, LaPorta recorded a game-high nine receptions for 65 yards. During the regular season, the rookie wide receiver caught 86 passes for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns in 17 games.
