Breaking news: “Problemes surrounding his leadership” have led KC Current to fire its coach.
Three games into the season, the Kansas City Current announced on Wednesday that head coach Matt Potter had been fired due to “issues around his leadership and employment responsibilities.”
In 2022, Potter’s first season as head coach, the Current made it to the NWSL championship game. However, Potter lost his job after the 2023 season began without a victory.
Concerning the leadership concerns mentioned in the announcement on Wednesday, The Current did not offer any information.
General manager Camille Ashton stated in the news release, “We watch the play on the pitch, we keep a pulse on the locker room, and we are constantly evaluating ways to improve our club.” “Based on our continuous improvement process, we think this change is appropriate at this time.”
When Potter was hired by Kansas City in January 2022, he brought with him experience from his time as the head coach of Oklahoma and Washington State universities, as well as from his time as the U-23 coach of the United States national team.
Kansas City’s regular-season record at the end of 2022 was 10-6-6. The team advanced to the NWSL championship game against the Portland Thorns after starting the postseason as the No. 5 seed.
Along with other exceptional NWSL veterans, the current team signed top free agent Debinha in the offseason, but they haven’t clicked on the field. They have also sparked some controversy over it, as Mykiaa Minniss, a third-round draft pick, alleges she was treated “less than professionally” by the team prior to being removed from the preseason roster.
With immediate effect, Caroline Sjöblom, Potter’s assistant coach, will assume the position of interim head coach. She will captain the Current into their road game against the Houston Dash on Wednesday night, which is their Challenge Cup debut.
