Good news: The San Francisco 49ers have just improved their roster with another essential player.
The San Francisco 49ers have placed S Tayler Hawkins and CB Jason Verrett on the practice squad Injured Reserve List and announced the addition of CB Terrance Mitchell and DL Sam Okuayinonu (oh-KOO-wah-new) to the squad’s practice squad. Furthermore, S George Odum’s Injured Reserve practice window has been opened by the team.
The Dallas Cowboys selected Mitchell (5-11, 191) in the seventh round (254th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played in 94 games (56 starts) and recorded 305 tackles, 1.0 sack, 63 passes defensed, nine interceptions, ten forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery during his eight-year NFL career with the Cowboys (2014–15), Chicago Bears (2015), Kansas City Chiefs (2016–17), Cleveland Browns (2018–20), Houston Texans (2021), and Tennessee Titans (2022). In addition, Mitchell has made four postseason appearances (three of which he started), recording 14 tackles and one pass defense.
On July 26, 2023, Mitchell agreed to a one-year contract with the 49ers; on August 9, the team released him.
The 31-year-old Mitchell is a native of Sacramento, California. He played 40 games (38 starts) at the University of Oregon from 2010 to 2013, recording 144 tackles, seven interceptions, 25 passes defensed, four forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
On May 13, 2022, Okuayinonu (6-1, 269) signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans, his first NFL team. He has played in six games during his two-year NFL career with the Tennessee Titans (2022–2023), recording 11 tackles and 0.5 sacks between the team’s active roster and practice squad. On January 10, 2023, Okuayinonu signed a Reserve/Future contract with Tennessee; on August 31, the team waived him.
Okuayinonu, a 25-year-old native of Lowell, Massachusetts, played at the University of Maryland from 2019 to 21. During that time, he made 29 appearances, totaling 103 tackles and 7.5 sacks.
On October 24, Hawkins (6-1, 205) signed a contract to join the team’s practice squad. In his one game as a starter, he recorded four tackles, one pass defensed, and his first career interception.
