Sean McVay regrets decision that doomed Rams in NFL playoff loss to Lions
Sean McVay might possess an extensive recall.
However, the Super Bowl-winning coach still has a problem with game management.
Sunday night’s 24-23 road loss by the Rams to the Lions in the NFL playoffs wild-card round was the result of some dubious decisions made by McVay.
With just over four minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Rams made the mistake of choosing to punt on fourth-and-14 at the Lions’ 44-yard line. The Rams never recovered the ball.
McVay explained his decision to punt to reporters after the game, saying, “We were hoping to get a stop, still having a timeout and four minutes, the way our defense was playing.”
McVay is one of the brightest offensive minds in the sport and did a fantastic job to get the Rams to the playoffs, but his in-game strategy has been questioned at times during his tenure.
Those little details especially matter in close games late in the fourth quarter, and McVay did not help himself by using two timeouts earlier in the half.
