Another star player for the Celtics has made an unexpected declaration regarding his retirement.
While it’s not unheard of for athletes to transition from playing to teaching after their playing careers are over, former Boston Celtics forward Luigi Datome has other ideas. After representing Italy in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, Datome announced his retirement. He recently told Basketnews that he doesn’t believe he’s a good match for the position.
“That’s not how I see myself,” he said to Basketnews. “I’ve had the honor of working with several excellent instructors, and I am aware that it calls for a great deal of mental toughness. I believe that rather than emphasizing the error, I’m more willing to understand it.
Datome continued, “In addition, I’m a quiet guy, and my coaching style might not align with those of coaches I had.”
🚨NEW CELTICS LAB PODCAST 🚨@CelticsLab responded to announcements regarding Jaylen Brown’s supermax extension, his suggestions for addressing systemic racism in Boston, and the fact that this is Mike Gorman’s final szn calling games.
The Italian great wing will continue to be associated with Olimpia Milan “in a different capacity” than as a player or coach going forward. He has played for Montepaschi Sienna, Scafati Givonna, Virtus Roma, Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics, Fenerbahce, and Olimpia Milan.
