A crucial player of the Montreal Canadiens sustains a devastating injury while…

Defenseman Mike Matheson of the Montreal Canadiens is listed as day-to-day due to a lower-body injury.

The injury was sustained by the 29-year-old during the team’s 4-3 shootout victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

With two goals and four assists in his first eight games of the season, Matheson has been on a tear. The Pointe-Claire, Quebec native Matheson had a shortened season last year due to multiple injuries.

In the 48 games he played in, he recorded eight goals, 26 assists, and a +7 rating.

After an unexpected 5-2-1 start to the season, the Canadiens can ill afford to lose Matheson for an extended period of time, especially since David Savard is currently sidelined due to a broken left hand.

Although they were predicted to be in a transition year, the Canadiens have surprised everyone by winning a number of close games so far.

Although the extent of Matheson’s injury is unknown, preliminary findings suggest that it is not a serious condition.

Matheson will probably play in one of the three games on the trip in the coming week as he will be traveling to Las Vegas with the Canadiens for their forthcoming road trip.

The Athletic’s Arpon Basu tweeted that the team believes Matheson’s injury is not serious.

Due to an injury that seemed to linger longer than anticipated, Matheson missed a large portion of the Canadiens training camp.

This also applied to a number of the injuries he sustained the previous year, such as the strain to his abdomen sustained during a morning skate that ultimately kept him out of action for the first month of the season.

Although Matheson’s frequent injuries should raise concerns, his on-ice performance does not. Matheson has been incredibly responsible and creative with the puck since a challenging final season with the Florida Panthers, which has allowed him to post strong offensive numbers in recent years.

If the Canadiens’ evaluation is accurate, Matheson will make a return later this week to try to build on his strong season debut.
