BREAKING: Commanders, who needed significant adjustments, at last make the right decision by hiring a qualified…
Adam Peters, a former assistant general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, has joined the Washington Commanders as general manager. He seems like a hire gone right.
As a scout, Peters helped to build successful football teams in New England from 2003 to 2008 and Denver from 2009 to 2016. His hiring was announced on Friday. He began working for the 49ers in 2017 as their vice president of player personnel, and in 2021 he was elevated to assistant general manager.
The Patriots and Broncos won Super Bowls while Peters was in those organizations. Under Peters’ direction in San Francisco, some noteworthy draft selections that were selected outside of the first round were tight end George Kittle, LB Fred Warner, WR Deebo Samuel, and QB Brock Purdy. The 49ers are the clear favorites to win the championship this season and made an appearance in Super Bowl LIV while Peters was serving in San Francisco.
The Commanders have five picks overall in the top 100 and the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Additionally, they have the greatest salary-cap space available (about $86 million), giving the front office the resources to turn around a team that had a 4-13 record in 2023.
The hiring of Washington’s next coach is also anticipated to be heavily influenced by Peters; one possibility is Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, who is connected to the position. In the same way that the 44-year-old Peters was regarded as one of the best general manager prospects, the 37-year-old is conceivably the most sought-after young coach available.
The fact that Peters was hired at least indicates that Josh Harris, the owner, is not playing around. In D.C., he wants to start building a winner right now.
