As the season progresses, the indianapolis colts sustain a fatal injury
Edwin Jackson, a linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts, was one of two people who died early on Sunday morning after being hit by an alleged intoxicated driver. He was only twenty-six.
Soon before 4 a.m. on Sunday, there was an automobile collision along Indiana’s Interstate 70 that resulted in the deaths of Jeffrey Monroe, 54, and Jackson.
A black Ford F-150 pickup truck swerved out of its lane and onto the emergency shoulder, hitting both men, according to the police.
Before they pulled over to the side of the road, Monroe, an Avon resident and employee of a ride-sharing app, is thought to have been driving Jackson.
Investigators think Monroe got out of the car to assist Jackson after he may have become ill during the ride, and that’s when they were both hit by the approaching car.
The pickup truck’s driver, Indianapolis resident Alex Cabrera Gonsales, 37, was identified. Gonsales attempted to leave the area on foot, but police eventually caught up with him and took him to a nearby jail. He may have been intoxicated and operating without a license, according to the Indiana Police.
Jackson’s passing was confirmed by a statement released by the Colts on Sunday afternoon.
“We were devastated to learn of Edwin Jackson’s demise. Everyone in the Colts organization adored Edwin.
We were impressed by his gregarious nature, spirit of competition, and diligent work ethic. He was well-liked by everyone he came into contact with, and our entire organization—including our locker room—will miss him terribly.
We also realize that there was a second fatality in the accident, which makes us even more sad on this particular day.
This tragedy has shocked and saddened us, and during this trying time, our prayers and thoughts are with the families of both men.”
In 2016, Jackson spent a single season with the Colts, participating in all 16 games and accumulating 42 tackles, which included two sacks.
After being placed on injured reserve in September, he missed the whole season.
