Breaking news: Insider talks about the Cowboys’ Jerry Jones may go after Bill Belichick.

NFL insider Mike Florio thinks that in order to keep team owner Jerry Jones from pursuing current New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick this winter, head coach Mike McCarthy might need to lead the Dallas Cowboys to at least the upcoming NFC Championship Game.

For a piece that was published on Wednesday, Florio wrote about the topic and said, “It all could come down to whether McCarthy can at least get the Cowboys back to the NFC Championship for the first time since 1995.” “Who can say? Jerry may need to play in the Super Bowl before he decides to stick with the best coach in the league.”

Former quarterback for the Patriots and current 98.5 Scott Zolak, host of Sports Hub, has a history of occasionally revealing big stories. In December, he stated that “everyone I talk to assumes” that Jones will try to sign Belichick if Patriots owner Robert Kraft and team president Jonathan Kraft decide to take the team in a different direction following New England’s third consecutive postseason exit. Julian Edelman, the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl LIII, recently expressed similar thoughts to Zolak, but that was before Jones appeared to publicly endorse McCarthy.

McCarthy has only won one of Dallas’s three playoff games thus far. This coming Sunday afternoon, the 12-5 Cowboys will play the 9-8 Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round of the postseason tournament.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler stated in a column that was released early on Wednesday that he “talked to a few people with the (Patriots) who wonder whether the longer this drags out actually increases the chances Belichick returns for one more year.” Fowler stated that he’s “not sensing much momentum for a Belichick trade to a new team.” Belichick is signed through the 2020–21 season.

In order to stay with the Patriots, Belichick made a suggestion on Monday that he would be prepared to cede some authority and collaborate with an executive on personnel decisions. Florio put out the theory that the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach “was also sending a message to potential future employers” with the remarks that might have caught Jones’ interest.

Belichick has been associated with the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Commanders, Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Las Vegas Raiders according to stories and rumors.

“Honestly, which makes more sense for Belichick—joining a rebuilding non-playoff team? or joining a team that just needs a fantastic coach and has a roster capable of making the playoffs?” stated Florio.

The Cowboys were set as 7.5-point favorites against the Packers as of Wednesday afternoon, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. You can only imagine Jones’s possible response if Dallas loses unexpectedly this weekend at AT&T Stadium.
