Terrible NWS Jake Roberts has transferred, and the Oklahoma Sooners have brought in another talented tight end to their roster.
The talent pool that is now available has essentially been determined as the transfer portal window has closed. For the 2024 season, Oklahoma has added yet another new player.
Jake Roberts declared his allegiance to the Sooners on social media. When he joins the program, he will still be eligible for one season.
Roberts attended Baylor for the previous year. In all, he caught 23 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown.
Roberts played tight end for three years at North Texas prior to attending Baylor. Over the course of three seasons, he participated in all 37 games for the Mean Green and finished with 43 receptions for 541 yards and three touchdowns. Roberts had his breakthrough year in 2022 as a junior, hauling in 28 passes for 394 yards and scoring each of the three touchdowns previously mentioned.
Roberts can now return home. He was born and raised in Oklahoma and attended Norman North High School, which is located nearby. The three-star recruit from Norman, Oklahoma was once committed to play for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, but he ultimately decided to attend UNT over Eastern Michigan, Tulsa, Colorado, Memphis, Air Force, and Tulsa. At the end of his prep career, he was ranked as a top-25 player inside Sooner State and as the 62nd overall tight end recruit in the country for the 2020 recruiting cycle.
Roberts, who is currently 248 pounds and approximately 6-foot-5 in height, is leaving for Oklahoma in the midst of a tight end room makeover. Roberts meets up with Seth Littrell, his former coach at North Texas, while assisting with this movement. With Littrell slated to take over as offensive coordinator for Oklahoma, the position of tight end will probably receive more attention in the offense. Joe Jon Finley, the tight ends coach and co-offensive coordinator, has gone to work knowing this and the talent boost that had to occur as it is.
Davon Mitchell, a four-star recruit who reclassified from 2025 to 2024 and will now enroll early with the Sooners, has already been signed by Oklahoma. Mitchell, who is regarded by many as the No. 167 overall prospect in the Top247 player rankings, is understandably excited about what lies ahead for him in Norman. But Oklahoma wasn’t done yet; they added Bauer Sharp, a transfer tight end. Oklahoma gained another intriguing talent for the roster the following year in the Southeastern Louisiana standout, who chose the Sooners over Utah and Tennessee.
Along with a few returning players, including second-year Kade McIntyre and third-year man Kaden Helms, Mitchell, Sharp, and now Roberts join the group. Unexpectedly, the Sooners have a wide range of options going into the SEC the following year in a position group that was somewhat of a weak point in 2023.
Roberts joins Michigan State offensive lineman Spencer Brown, San Diego State cornerback Dezjhon Malone, Purdue wide receiver Deion Burks, UT-Martin running back Sam Franklin, and Southeastern Louisiana tight end as the officially 11th transfer added by Oklahoma this cycle. Miami (OH) defensive end Caiden Woullard, USC offensive lineman Michael Tarquin, North Texas offensive lineman Febechi Nwaiwu, Utah cornerback Jocelyn Malaska, Florida State kicker Tyler Keltner, and Bauer Sharp.
