To strengthen his team’s assault Brian Daboll has formally announced the addition of another terrifying football wizard.
Before their last regular season game, a former quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks is signing a contract with the New York Giants.
According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Jacob Eason, who was the Seahawks’ backup quarterback in 2021, is re-signing with the Giants practice squad.
Prior to his December release, Eason had been a member of the Giants’ practice
squad for one month earlier in the season.
On Thursday, January 4, Raanan stated, “QB Jacob Eason has been re-signed by
the Giants to the practice squad.” It appears to be a contingency. A limited
listing for Tyrod Taylor’s back was seen on the injury report.
Throughout his NFL career, Jacob Eason has seen little playing time.
Early in his NFL career, the 26-year-old Eason has developed into a journeyman quarterback. Eason has been traded from team to team since the Indianapolis Colts selected him in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
After Russell Wilson sustained an injury in the middle of the 2021 season, Eason was released by the Colts and signed with the Seahawks. Prior to his dismissal
during roster cuts that occurred before the 2022 season began, he filled a
backup position until the end of the 2021 campaign.
Eason has since played for the Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Carolina Panthers.
Eason has scarcely seen any playing time despite switching teams; in two games,
he has gone 5-for-10 for 84 yards and two interceptions.
Eason’s signing with the Giants’ practice squad has mostly to due with starter Tyrod Taylor’s injury. Tommy DeVito is currently the backup quarterback and would see playing time against the Philadelphia Eagles if Taylor is forced out of the game.
Jacob Eason Was Once Top QB Prospect in Class of 2016
While Eason has had a less-than-stellar career in the NFL, he was once a highly-touted quarterback. The 6-foot-6 quarterback was considered the top quarterback prospect coming out of high school back in 2016. Eason was so highly touted that he was courted and received offers from big programs such as the Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, Alabama Crimson Tide and Florida State Seminoles. He eventually committed to the Georgia Bulldogs.
He started as the starting quarterback during his first season in 2016 and carried over that role into the 2017 campaign. But after suffering an injury in the first game of the season and Jake Fromm’s rise to prominence (Fromm helped the Bulldogs to the National
Championship Game after Eason’s injury), Eason was permanently removed from the starting lineup. Eason
would switch to the Washington Huskies shortly after that.
While his collegiate career certainly never lived up to his billing coming out of high school, Eason still had high expectations entering the NFL draft. As Lance Zierlein of NFL.com wrote in his scouting report of Eason back in 2020, his NFL comparison was none
other than former No. 1 overall pick and three-time Pro Bowler Carson Palmer.
Although Zierlein writes of Eason’s lack of mobility and effectiveness when
pressured, he projected him as a second-round draft selection.
Though his problems with pocket posture and finishing progressions
neatly are more akin to Brock Osweiler, Zierlein noted that “his elite size and
arm talent are reminiscent of Carson Palmer.” “Eason is entertaining to watch
when he’s tearing up the field with throws and making deep play-action
shots, but his lack of mobility both inside and outside the pocket is concerning,
especially given his inefficiency when under pressure.”
It’s clear that Eason has fallen short of those demands. Perhaps the former five-
star prospect will earn his first-game
start if the Giants decide to retain him around for the upcoming campaign.
