After finishing their non-conference schedule, the No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners (12-1) are prepared to take on the Iowa State Cyclones (11-2) in Norman on Saturday night to begin Big 12 action.
Under Porter Moser, Oklahoma has done nothing but shine in Year 3 thus far. The Sooners had a much-changed roster going into the new season, along with new coaching faces and many unanswered questions about their potential as a club.
With 13 games under their belt, the answer to that question has shown to be much more athletic, with a team that plays in an exciting manner and appears to have the depth to compete on a nightly basis in the Big 12 league. OU appears to be at least an NCAA Tournament team and possibly one that might mount a strong run when they get there, ranking as high as No. 7 in the AP Poll.
A team led by third-year coach T.J. Otzelberger of Iowa State is enjoying success as they prepare to take on Oklahoma in the league opening on Saturday. The Cyclones, who were riding a six-game winning streak going into play on Saturday, have played at a very high level since losing a couple of neutral site games at the ESPN Events Invitational back in November.
The Sooners and Cyclones will square off for the 216th time in their history; Oklahoma has a 122-93 advantage in the rivalry. OU has won 68 of the 93 games played in the Sooners’ home gym, giving them a commanding advantage in games played in Norman. But in their two matchups from the previous season, each road team prevailed, with the most recent one ending in a 61-50 OU victory in Ames on February 25, 2023.
The Sooners’ last trip through the Big 12 conference will begin with this game as well. Following their reported relocation to the SEC back in the summer of 2021, Porter Moser and Oklahoma will start playing in the conference in 2024–2025.
