After winning a 10-1 start and making it to the Super Bowl the next year, to get fired?
After the Philadelphia Eagles have lost four of their last five games and rumors of “locker room fractures” are starting to circulate, that is the question that is out of the Novacare Complex.
Nick Sirianni is a 34-16 coach who is the only coach in Philadelphia history to make the playoffs in his first three seasons. Should Eagles ownership even consider parting ways with him?
You’re not the only one who finds it absurd to believe Sirianni’s employment status is in doubt. Don’t worry.
All-Pro wide receiver AJ Brown made it very apparent in his first interview with reporters in recent weeks that rumors circulating about his dissatisfaction with Sirianni or the coaching staff are unfounded.
“I can tell you that there may be things that Nick probably wants to fix about himself, but one thing I can respect is that loyalty is not one of them,” Brown stated.
“I say that because he comes up with an explanation when it involves him. And because of his employment, he bears the brunt of the blame.
But this year, the coaches didn’t play a single snap. It’s not the instructors. We are the ones.
Brown also made it plain that he wasn’t sure why he was being singled out for “body-language concerns” in light of the team’s recent struggles, even though he didn’t want to talk to reporters to spread more negativity throughout the building.
“This locker room is filled with frustration,” Brown remarked. “I was expressing emotion and shaking my head, so why are you focusing only on me? There was frustration in the body language of every person in that stadium. It’s not my concern.
Brown’s remarks Wednesday gave a franchise that was in dire need of answers a sense of relief. They’ve lost four of their previous five games, with their most recent defeat coming at the hands of the Arizona Cardinals, who were then sitting at three wins, 35-31.
Even though the team’s position as the NFC East frontrunner was lost in the game, they are still on track to make the playoffs for the third consecutive season, a record that hasn’t been achieved by the Eagles very often.
This adds to the confusion surrounding recent discussions about Sirianni’s tenure.
Why would a team experiencing its second consecutive season of 11 or more wins replace their head coach due to a late-season collapse? Should the team manage to win one or more playoff games, would the storyline abruptly shift? In any case, why would the storyline surrounding a coach shift after just two games?
The kind of success Sirianni and his team have enjoyed over the last three years is something that other NFL teams would kill to have. None of that is diminished by one bad month of play.
