With Brent Venables making the official announcement of this much-anticipated mosterous player’s arrival, the Sooners celebrated greatly.
The addition of veteran cornerback Woodi Washington to the Oklahoma Sooners for a sixth season this offseason is good news for the defense. Washington gives the Sooners another seasoned player to support Ted Roof and Brent Venables in defense by using the extra year of eligibility he was granted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Together with defensive tackles Da’Jon Terry and Jacob Lacey, Danny Stutsman, Billy Bowman, and other veteran leaders on the field, Washington adds a wealth of experience to the defense before the SEC season.
Oklahoma suffered a lot of injuries and inexperience at cornerback in 2023, which contributed to the team’s problems at the position. But Washington was a constant, starting all 13 of Oklahoma’s games and leading the team with 851 defensive snaps. Washington was ahead of Bowman by 70 snaps.
Despite ranking 112th in the country for passing yards allowed, Oklahoma’s defense had the 22nd-best completion percentage against the opposition. With Washington back, they have an opportunity to build on their defense, which jumped from 99th in the country in 2022 to 48th in 2023, improving their allowed points per game by a touchdown.
Washington provides security for the Sooners. They know they have a solid veteran option to rely upon in 2024 as they continue to develop their cornerback talent.
