incredibly tragic, as the Detroit Lions have just revealed the coach’s passing

Gary Moeller, an 81-year-old head coach of the Detroit Lions and Michigan, passed away on Monday.

Coach Lloyd Carr, who worked under Gary Moeller before taking over as head coach of the Wolverines in 1995, described Moeller as “a great family man, great friend, great coach and a man of integrity and high character.” “I admired him, I respected him and I loved him.”

Moeller was an Ohio State student. His 1967 hiring by Miami (Ohio) as a staff member aided in his eventual landing with the Buckeyes’ fiercest opponents. He worked for two years as Bo Schembechler’s assistant before moving to Ann Arbor in 1969.

After rising through the ranks to become the defensive coordinator in 1973, Moeller left to take a coaching position at Illinois in 1977. He returned to the Wolverines three years later.

When Schembechler retired at the end of the 1989 season, Moeller was given the opportunity to take over as show director. In his five years as head coach, Michigan finished 44-13 and won four bowl games. His zenith came in a 38-31 triumph over Washington in the Rose Bowl in 1993.
