A Nice court sentenced Algerian international Youcef Atal to eight months of suspended jail time and a fine of €45,000 for reposting an article regarding the Israel-Hamas war on social media.

The social media repost, according to the court, incited hatred based on religion.

After deleting the media post, Nice, a Ligue 1 side, suspended defender Atal in October of last year. Atal has been with Nice since 2018.

In the largest Palestinian militant strike in Israel’s history, Hamas fighters killed 1,200 Israelis on October 7. This sparked an Israeli military and air offensive that is now into its third month.

By Wednesday, 22,313 Palestinians have lost their lives, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

According to the French newspaper Nice-Matin, Atal reposted a 35-second video of a Palestinian preacher who prayed for God to cast “a bad day on the Jews” the day after the Hamas attack on October 7.

He has expressed regret for the removed post.

“I apologize, I was not intending to shock so many people with my post,” the 27-year-old Atal wrote on Instagram at the time.

When Reuters contacted Atal’s attorney, he did not immediately respond. His nation has chosen him to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations, which will take place in the Ivory Coast starting on January 13.
