A prospective defensive player for the Eagles in 2024 has been acquired…..

In order to choose Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter, the Philadelphia Eagles moved up one place, from No. 10 overall to No. 9, in exchange for a 2024 fourth-round pick. Regarded as possibly the finest defensive player in the draft based on video, Carter dropped to the bottom of the top 10 due to concerns about his character and ability to work with others. Howie Roseman uses a premium pick at a premium position once more.

Brugler writes, “Carter was a powerful presence on the interior and played several alignments in co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp’s 3-4 basic scheme during his one-year start at Georgia.” The defensive line produced three first-round picks for the Bulldogs in the 2022 draft class: Travon Walker, Jordan Davis, and Devonte Wyatt. However, despite losing time due to injury, No. 88 showed the most disruptive potential on the 2021 tape, and that performance carried over into 2022. Carter displays the initial burst and play strength to tear, displace, and disturb the backfield rhythm with a playing base that is constantly balanced.

In addition to his outstanding physical prowess, he also demonstrates expertise in his ability to rush with his eyes and trust his gut to sense blocking pressure. Carter still has room for improvement in a number of areas, but his unique blend of strength, speed, and body control makes him stand out when it comes to block destruction. He poses a dilemma for NFL decision-makers because, although he is still a very young player and may not mature as expected, he is undoubtedly the most talented prospect in this draft class and might finish among the top five players in the NFL at his position.

Overview

For the Eagles, this is a fantasy come true on the field, notwithstanding worries about Carter off the field. With the New Orleans Saints, they acquired possibly the best defensive player in college football last year through a pre-draft deal. Carter provides a theoretical building brick for a team that emphasizes constructing through the line of scrimmage whenever possible as Philadelphia starts to assemble the roster following the long-term contract that Jalen Hurts receiver.

How well he fits in. An inside pass rusher was desperately needed when Javon Hargrave left in free agency. The team was hoping for a significant jump from Davis or Milton Williams to give them more inside weight, but Fletcher Cox, who was 32, was re-signed. The good news is that Carter and Davis complement each other nicely, as the Eagles already know.

impact of rookies

Carter will be expected to play a starter’s share of snaps regardless of whether he is considered a starter or not. The Eagles will point to the presence of Nakobe Dean and Davis in the locker room as reasons why they are better equipped than most to address any issues that may arise. Theoretically, the goal of creating a high-character locker room is to accommodate anomalies. It appears to be a wager worth making.

Impact of Depth Charts

Suddenly, the defensive tackle room of the Eagles appears quite impressive. As the nose tackle, Davis will not be under as much pressure to establish himself as a quick pass-rushing threat. Carter is joined by Cox and Williams, while Marlon Tuipulotu and veteran Kentavius Street are now positioned close to the bottom of the depth chart.

Quick assessment

Since Carter was passed over by the first eight teams in the draft for a reason, it is difficult to declare this to be a guaranteed home run. It will take time to see if the Eagles have accurately assessed Carter as a person and their capacity to bring out the best in him. On the field, though, it is a wonderful fit for how the Eagles intend to develop their group. Roseman will be overjoyed.
