Mike McCarthy has revealed yet another horrific injury to a valuable prospect, severely hurting his team.

After a defensive back suffered an injury late in the week and another took longer than anticipated to recover, the Detroit Lions (11-4) and Dallas Cowboys (10-5) have announced their Week 17 injury designations. As a result, they may have a thin secondary.

NOTE: Bold text indicates any changes from the injury report from yesterday.

Disqualified TE Edge (hip) Brock Wright Twenty DB are left on the evaluation days for James Houston (leg). There are 13 evaluation days left for C.J. Gardner-Johnson (pectoral).
For the past two weeks, Wright has not practiced, so he will miss his second straight game. It’s likely that the Lions anticipate he will be ready for the postseason because he avoided being placed on injured reserve, which would have kept him out of action for four weeks. James Mitchell moves up to the position of TE2 in the interim.

James Houston has 20 days from the start of his injury evaluation clock to determine whether or not he can rejoin the active roster. He is not going to be elevated for this game, but he is still eligible to return at any point, and he may do so in Week 18 or the postseason.

Although Gardner-Johnson’s progress toward playing again has been apparent for a few weeks, it doesn’t seem like he’s ready to be activated just yet. He is out, so we’ll probably have to wait until Week 18 for him to come back.

dubious
Cam Sutton (toe)
Sutton was absent from practice on Thursday, presumably due to a toe injury sustained during the week. Although he might be able to play on Sunday due to a dubious designation, midweek injuries are frequently difficult to recover from in time for a Sunday, much less a Saturday one.

Not designated as an injury
Lt The groin of Taylor Decker
B Frank Ragnow RT (toe, back, and knee) Penei Sewell (delta) LB The shoulder of Derrick Barnes
CBC Jerry Jacobs, hamstring, Facebook The knee of Jason Cabina
Although Decker and Ragnow received veteran rest days on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, none of them will be listed as injured going into the match. The Lions will once again have their entire starting offensive line together because Sewell does not have a designation.

Both Barnes and Jacobs practiced for a full week and are ready to play against the Cowboys despite missing the game the previous weekend.

After being placed on injured reserve, Cabinda was formally activated and added to the 53-man roster. He is cleared to play because he did not enter the game with an injury designation. The Lions cut CB Chase Lucas and LB Trevor Nowaske in addition to adding Cabinda. Cabinda will occupy one of those available spots, leaving the other for a future move.

Cowboys injury designations: Disqualified

Lt DE Tyron Smith (back) Viliami Fehoko (where the knee is marked for return in IR)
