After much disappointment, Andy Reid finally disclosed the departure of a crucial player who had finally inked a new contract with another tem, which has dealt a serious blow to the Chiefs.
After a competitive preseason in which there seemed to be several lead changes, so to speak, on the team’s depth chart, the Kansas City Chiefs have provided more clarity on the running back position. At least by the league deadline, the team ultimately opted to waive Deneric Prince rather than keep him on the active roster.
Teams must reduce their rosters from the 90-man offseason roster to the 53-man active rosters that are used during the regular season by 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, according to a deadline set by the National Football League. Currently, it seems that Prince won’t be playing for the Chiefs, though they may try to get him back on the practice squad.
Prince will now be placed on the waiver wire alongside over a thousand other players, and it will be up to us to wait and see if any teams decide to make a claim on him. Following the format of this year’s original draft order, the Chicago Bears are first on the waiver list and are followed by the Kansas City Chiefs.
If Prince clears waivers, he can join the 16-man Chiefs taxi squad, which includes depth in case of injury as well as developing talent.
Prince experienced a significant decline from his peak performance during the preseason, but such unpredictable performances are a necessary part of adjusting to life as an NFL rookie. Soon after signing with the Chiefs in the spring, Prince—a talented running back prospect out of Tulsa—turned heads with his underappreciated pass-catching ability and a tough running style that seemed destined to earn him a surprise roster spot.
