Raptors waived injured swingman, who will miss the entire season
Ron Harper Jr., a swingman with the Raptors on a two-way contract, has been waived, the team said in a news release today.
During a G League game on Thursday, Harper—who also played for Toronto in 2022–2023—suffered a subluxation of his left shoulder. The Raptors claim that he will have season-ending surgery to treat the issue.
Ron Jr., the five-time NBA champion Ron Harper’s son, played in just ten NBA games for the Raptors overall, one of which was this season. In 52 minutes of action, he scored 20 points on 8 of 16 shots. Since leaving Rutgers undrafted in 2022, he has primarily played with Toronto’s NBAGL affiliate, the Raptors 905 in Toronto.
Harper played 32.3 minutes a night, averaging 16.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in 49 Showcase Cup and regular season games with the 905 in all. In the G League, he had a shooting line of.486/.327/.773.
Despite being waived before the salary guarantee date, Harper will receive his entire $559,782 two-way contract, as Blake Murphy of Sportsnet.ca verifies (via Twitter). If a player gets hurt while under a non-guaranteed contract (one without an Exhibit 9 clause), he will be paid until the end of the season, or until he recovers, whichever comes first.
With Markquis Nowell and Javon Freeman-Liberty as their additional two-way players, the Raptors will now have an available two-way spot.
