Colts Indicate a Recognizably Faced Receiver The Indianapolis Colts are maintaining a high level of competition for the next six games by having dependable depth on their roster.
After veteran pass-catcher KJ Hamler suffered an injury on Friday, the Indianapolis Colts announced the signing of former undrafted free agent Ethan Fernea to the wide receiver position. Hamler was placed on the practice squad injured list.
It’s a bit disappointing that Hamler is now on the injured list because, if given the chance, some believed he could play an intriguing role in head coach Shane Steichen’s offense. But it gives former UCLA Bruin Fernea, who has spent the last two years on and off the Colts practice squad, another opportunity.

Fernea hasn’t had any statistics to show off, but in training camp and during practice, he has flashed some big-play ability downfield. As Indianapolis looks to carve out a postseason spot, he will surely help push the defensive backs and fellow receivers on the practice squad to be at their best.
These kind of transactions don’t make headlines, but considering how crucial practice and depth players are, particularly at skill positions, the Colts’ decision to bring Fernea back is significant because he instills familiarity, a spirit of competition, and a drive for success in the team.
